Deborah Piston-Hatlen
Cultural Immersion Projects Assistant Director

In November of 2007 Deborah Piston-Hatlen began her position as the assistant director in the Office of Cultural Immersion Projects. With her experience in international education she has added greatly to the office and its services.

According to Deborah Piston-Hatlen, she enjoys her new position visiting cultural immersion sites, working with students and being a part of their cultural experiences. Deborah also works with the graduate instructors in cultural immersions, observes students during their initial student teaching prior to leaving for their overseas projects, and engages in administrative duties.

She has spent several years living in France, both as a student and a teacher, and has been involved in international education for much of her life.  Before joining the Cultural Immersion Projects staff, she held positions with the Creole Institute/Committee for Research and Development in Language Instruction and in West European Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. Combined, her work experience abroad and her familiarity with the Indiana University student community makes her an excellent resource for students interested in Cultural Immersions. She adds, “I am delighted to be a part of such a great program!” Deborah enjoys gardening and hiking in her free time.
