Teacher candidates will be required by school districts to have a criminal history check completed and on file with the district before being permitted to participate in field experiences or student teaching activities. The Field Experiences and Student Teaching Office will notify candidates about the criminal history check process prior to the start of each placement. The state requires an Indiana State Police Criminal History check when candidates apply for a teaching license.

A Criminal History check details a person's record of “arrest, indictment, information or other formal criminal charges and final dispositions. School districts are primarily concerned about felony violence, sex, drug or alcohol related issues.  Status offenses, traffic and parking violations are not typically an issue. Teacher candidates should be prepared to explain in detail any items that appear on a criminal history check. The State of Indiana does not license convicted felons to teach in the public schools.
