Direct Admit Scholars Program

The Direct Admit Scholars Program at the Indiana University Bloomington School of Education offers direct admission to a small number of highly qualified incoming freshmen who demonstrate a strong academic background and a sincere commitment to teaching. It is only open to incoming freshmen for each fall semester. The Direct Admit Scholars Program is highly selective.

This program provides promising future teachers with the best possible experience at one of the nation’s finest education schools. High-performing incoming freshmen will be invited to apply to the Direct Admit Scholars Program based on information acquired through the IU application for admission.

Opportunities

Direct Admit Scholars are presented a variety of opportunities which include but are not limited to:

  • Guaranteed admission into the program of choice within the School of Education, provided minimum requirements are met
  • Consideration for School of Education scholarships
  • Academic advising from School of Education advisors during summer orientation and throughout the academic year
  • Priority registration for certain education courses
  • Opportunities to meet with local School of Education alumni currently teaching in the field
  • Invitations to special events at the School of Education and meetings and events designed specifically for Direct Admit Scholars

New Scholarship Program for Direct Admit Scholars

All students who are invited to join the School of Education Direct Admit Program and who have received an Office of Enrollment Management Automatic Academic Scholarship will receive an additional Direct Admit Education Scholars Award, as noted below.

  •  Excellence/Distinction ScholarshipDirect Admit Education Scholars will receive an additional $2,000 per year (up to 4 years)
  • Prestige Scholarship- Direct Admit Education Scholars will receive an additional $1,000 per year (up to 4 years)
  • Hudson & Holland Scholars Program (HHSP) – Direct Admit Education Scholars will receive an additional $1,000 from the School of Education as long as students remain in good standing with the HHSP program.

·         Students will receive only the highest Direct Admit Education Scholars award for which they are eligible above.

 Additional Benefits:

  • Valedictorian Award – Direct Admit Scholars who are also valedictorians of their high school will receive an additional $1,000 per year (up to 4 years)
  • All students who participate in the School of Education Direct Admit Program will qualify for a one-time $2,000 scholarship toward the Cultural Immersion Projects student teaching experience.

Applying to the Direct Admit Scholars Program

Being considered for the Direct Admit Scholars program is a two step process.  Students must first apply and be admitted to Indiana University.  Students interested in the Direct Admit Scholars program must then complete the Selective Scholarship Application (SSA).

To automatically be invited to apply to the Direct Admit Scholars program via the Selective Scholarship Application (SSA), students must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Apply to IU on or before November 1, 2011 and list an education program as the intended major
  • Be admitted to IU through the IU Office of Admissions
  • Demonstrate a minimum SAT score of 1100 (critical reading and math) or minimum ACT score of 24
  • Demonstrate a minimum GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale (this can be a weighted GPA)
  • Students admitted to IU with an intended major in education and invited to apply to the Hudson & Holland Scholars program will also be invited to apply.

Students who do not meet the above requirements but who are interested in the program can request to apply to the program by contacting Katie Paulin beginning in October of the senior year, only after being admitted to IU.

Timeline for the Incoming Class of 2012

  • August 1, 2011:  Students can begin the application for Indiana University through the IU Office of Admissions.
  • November 1, 2011:  Students must have their complete application to the IU Office of Admissions on or before this date.  Students who meet the above requirements will automatically be invited to apply to the Direct Admit Scholars Program via the Selective Scholarship Application when they have been admitted to IU.
  • December 15, 2011:  Selective Scholarship Applications for the Direct Admit Scholars program must be submitted on or before December 15.
  • March 1, 2012:  Decisions regarding direct admission will be mailed on or before March 1.
