License Types
For individuals who began their college program prior to Fall 2002 and who will complete one of the following programs before June 2006.
Your first license will be a "standard" license in your teaching major/primary area and, if required, supporting area(s). (Social studies majors must have one primary and two supporting areas initially; Science majors must have a primary and supporting area initially). With some exceptions, a specialty test is usually required in each area. See an advisor to determine which areas require a specialty test. A minor or endorsement may be added to a valid standard license without taking the specialty test.
If you plan to go out of state rather than teach in Indiana, we strongly recommend that you obtain your Indiana teaching license. Indiana has a reciprocal agreement with approximately 43 other states. The reciprocal agreement means that if you have an Indiana teaching license, you can teach in one of these 43 states for at least a year. During that year you must complete any other requirements for a license in that state.
- Standard License in Kindergarten-Primary Education (valid for teaching grades K-3) and Early Childhood Education (valid for teaching in all subjects in prekindergarten).
- Standard License in Elementary Education (valid for teaching grades 1-6 and 7-8 if non-departmentalized.)
- Standard License in Senior High/Junior High/Middle School (valid for teaching grades 5-12)
- Standard License in All Grade Education (valid for teaching grades K-12 in physical education, or music education, or visual arts).
For individuals starting college in Fall 2002 and thereafter:
