Field Based Experiences
Field experiences are a critical component of this pre-service program. Interns in the ST-to-T program will have close to a full year of field experiences in the middle and high school setting. This enables ST-to-T interns the opportunity to observe mentor teachers as they establish and develop an effective rapport with students. It also ensures that ST-to-T interns experience school culture at various time periods of an academic year and watch students progress over an extended period of time.
Although each school corporation has the opportunity to provide input in terms of the field experience schedule, the program is designed so that two program participants will co-teach with one mentor teacher. Interns will experience increasing degrees of involvement as the school year progresses. Student teaching will take place during the first ten weeks of the spring semester. This creates the potential for ST-to-T interns to work as substitute teachers during the remainder of the middle and high school year.
Mentorship Support
The program is designed to provide each interns with a mentor teacher who will provide strong, long-lasting, and on-going guidance and expertise during this academic experience. ST-to-T interns will be encouraged to engage in reflective discussions with mentor teachers about instructional practice and teacher beliefs related to the classroom and field experience settings.
Technology Integration
Technology is an important tool that can be used to support and enhance teaching and learning. ST-to-T interns will not only use technology to access resources and communicate with other educators but also will use it for self-assessment purposes.
Master's Degree Option
It is possible to complete coursework for licensure as well as work towards a master’s degree; ST-to-T interns are encouraged to enroll concurrently in a master's degree program. If you are interested in earning a master’s degree at the same time you work towards secondary licensing, you will want to talk with a program faculty member about how to plan for this educational goal.
