Welcome to the ST-to-T Program

Program Description

The ST-to-T program is for those individuals who have already earned a baccalaureate degree in a subject area and who are interested in becoming secondary (middle school, junior high or high school) teachers in one of these specific subject areas: science, mathematics, social studies, English, journalism,or foreign language. The program is designed to develop, support and promote thoughtful, innovative practices and reflective teaching in secondary schools. Candidates are expected to earn their secondary teaching license in one academic year, plus the preceding summer session.

If you do not have a baccalaureate degree in English, Journalism, a foreign (world) language (French, German, Japanese, or Spanish), mathematics, science (biology, chemistry, Earth Space Science, or physics), or social studies (history, geography, economics, political science, psychology or sociology), you will need to speak with an academic advisor in the School of Education to discuss the possibility of creating an equivalent major in one of the identified content areas.

Program Overview

The ST-to-T group will begin in June 2008 and is expected to complete program expectations by the end of the spring semester 2009. ST-to-T interns take the majority of their coursework together and will work with mentor teachers in secondary classrooms two days each week for the majority of the fall semester. The ten-week student teaching experience is scheduled for the spring semester and during that time the interns work in schools five days a week. It may also be possible to substitute teach following the completion of the student teaching experience in the spring.

Program Costs and Financial Aid

The expected cost of the program is approximately $8,000 for in-state students and $16,000 for non-resident students. This estimate includes tuition for the coursework and additional fees specific to the program such as those associated with the field experiences. This estimate does not include mandatory student fees such as the application fee, technology, health service fees and transportation fees. Financial aid (loans and work study) information is available through the Office of Student Financial Assistance. All questions should be directed to the financial aid office. Eligibility for financial assistance is based on completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form: www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Students who anticipate a need for some form of financial aid should file the FAFSA at least 90 days before their program begins. Note that financial aid is not the same for certification only as for certification plus master's degree.

The Indiana University Secondary Transition to Teaching program seeks to prepare highly qualified beginning middle and high school teachers. The most inspiring teachers are those who are as passionate about their calling as they are knowledgeable about their content. The ST-to-T program is small and has an individual focus within a group-based program; consequently, enrollment is limited. Candidates for the 2008-2009 group will be identified based on assessment of all the elements of their application.
