Teacher Licensure Programs
Indiana University, Bloomington, offers graduate certification programs for various school settings:
- Elementary is considered Kindergarten through Grade 6 in an elementary school setting. The content area is considered "generalist". Two programs are available:
- Secondary is considered grades 6-12 when in a junior high, middle school or high school setting. The content or subject areas are specific to the areas which are available at the undergraduate level. Three professional education pathways for these certifications are:

General Information About Admission
- Qualifications
- Programs are available to students who hold a bachelor's or graduate degree.
- A 2.5 GPA in the cumulative undergraduate coursework (and in the subject area for secondary majors) is considered minimal, but may not be adequate for some programs.
- Two letters of recommendations are required for most programs.
- Testing
- Praxis I/PreProfessional Skills Tests (PPST) in reading, writing and mathematics are required for those seeking an initial license. For information on this test, see www.ets.org/praxis.
- Praxis II test in the subject area will be required before licensing and is usually taken near the end of the certification program.
- Graduate Record Exams (GREs) are not required for admission to a certification-only program, but may be required if the student applies for a master's DEGREE program while seeking certification.
- A 3.0 undergraduate GPA may exempt a student from the GREs.
- Application
- Students may apply on-line, listing Education Licensure programs as the Academic Program and the particular certification area as the major. However, one may apply for the master's degree option while seeking certification. See below.
- For Transition to Teaching programs, apply for Education-all other areas, "T2T- certification area".
- Master's Degree Option
- Students seeking a master's degree WHILE completing certification should apply for the master's degree. In that case, students will meet both DEGREE and CERTIFICATION requirements.
- Certification-only students, if interested in pursing the master's degree after admission to the School of Education, should apply for the master's degree before accumulating more than 15 credits if the certification coursework is to be used for a master's degree .
- Teacher Education Program (TEP)
- Students will also be required to be admitted to the Teacher Education Program (TEP), a benchmark within the School of Education.
- Qualifying scores on reading, writing and math portions of the Praxis I ( www.ets.org/praxis ) are required for admission to the TEP.
- After admission to an Indiana University, Bloomington, program, apply at https://info.educ.indiana.edu/teachered/.
- Certain coursework may require admission to the TEP.
- Being admitted to the School of Education or Graduate School is a separate process than being admitted to the Teacher Education Program.
