Reading Endorsement

Rules 2002 License Additions, Reading Level One

The new Rules 2002 license addition goes into effect July 1, 2006, and requires twenty-four (24) semester hours which include courses in reading methods, literature, linguistics, and critical issues for the reading professional. The license addition is available in both undergraduate and graduate levels. Graduate students may use appropriate courses from their undergraduate program to apply toward these requirements.

The license addition may also be combined with master’s degree programs in teacher certification areas. An application form is available in Suite 1000 (School of Education). A 3.0 GPA is required. Graduate students must be admitted to graduate Language Education Masters program or ECGP.

Undergraduate Elementary Reading Level One License Addition:

Reading Methods: (12 credit hours)

  • E340 Methods of Teaching Reading I (3) or E342 or 352
  • E341 Methods of Teaching Reading II (3)
  • X425 Practicum in Reading (6) –occurs within student teaching semester

Literature: (3 credit hours)

  • X460 Books for Reading Instruction (3)

Linguistics: (6 credit hours)

  • X470 Psycholinguistics for Teachers (3)
  • L407 Instructional Issues in Language Learning for English Teachers (3)

Professionalism: (3 credit hours)

  • L409 Critical Issues for the Reading Professional (3)

Graduate Reading Level One License Addition: (24)

Application to the Master's program or ECGP is preferred, but not required, for level one licensing.

    • L525 Practicum in Reading (6) for ECGP and other students pursuing initial teacher's license.

Rules 2002 Reading License Addition, Level Two for K-12:

The new Rules 2002 Reading License Addition Level Two is currently being developed, however, a teacher must first earn the Level One License addition to attain Level Two.
