ABOUT ME

I research the migration and hybridization of subaltern literacies in the Americas. My published work explores Latino visual discourse; for example, the journey of Mesoamerican icons from Mexico and Central America, their public and private display in U.S. Latino communities, their presence in drawings, also featuring icons representing unique U.S. bicultural idenities, created by Latino youth in the U.S. for the purpose of constructing their cultural identities. I teach undergraduate courses in inquiry into secondary, English Language Arts methods, and graduate courses in theoretical and research perspectives on literacies. I have particular interests in: pushing the New Literacy Studies in productive, theoretical directions; subaltern and indigenous literacies in the Americas; how English language learners, particularly secondary students in U.S. schools, develop as writers in English; how novice teachers develop their teacher identities and how teachers might be encouraged and supported as teacher-researchers.
