DOCTORAL RECRUITMENT PROGRAM: Mark Your Calendar for February 11th & 12th

The best time to visit the HESA doctoral program is during the Doctoral Recruitment Program, which will be held on February 11-12, 2009. The Doctoral Recruitment Program provides the best opportunity to meet the HESA faculty, current doctoral students, other applicants like yourself, as well as potential assistantship providers. The program itinerary includes an introduction of the HESA faculty, an overview of the doctoral programs and curriculum, and an introduction to the various research groups associated with the doctoral program. Dress for recruitment program activities is business casual, but some students bring business attire if they schedule interviews with potential assistantship providers.  The main program will occur on February 11th. The second day, February 12th, is set aside to provide you with an opportunity to interview with assistantship providers, tour campus and the Bloomington area, and the opportunity to have lunch with current students and ask any final questions you may have. While we encourage you to attend both days of the program, please note that the main components of the program will occur on the first day and the second is yours to use as you think is best.  We welcome and encourage everyone who has applied to the HESA program to attend  the IU Doctoral Recruitment Program.

FINDING ASSISTANTSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

There is not a centralized office at IU which controls all graduate assistantships; however, there are two primary ways by which prospective HESA students can locate assistantships (see below). Rest assured though, most HESA students do find assistantships on the IU-Bloomington or IUPUI campuses. Other students have also pursued a variety of opportunities at surrounding institutions, including Wabash College, Ivy Tech Community College, Franklin College, and DePauw University.

INTERVIEWS COORDINATED THROUGH DOCTORAL OUTREACH PROGRAM:

The HESA Doctoral Recruitment Program includes an opportunity for doctoral students to interview with a small number of IU departments as part of their schedule on February 12th.  This interview process is officially part of the HESA Master’s program Outreach efforts, however, a number of participating assistantship providers will also be offering interviews to doctoral students through this process.  We will be updating our site with new information soon!

INTERVIEWS COORDINATED ON YOUR OWN:

Many assistantship providers do not participate in the Outreach interview process, so you will need to contact other offices you are interested in directly. We encourage you to get started on this process as soon as possible.

We have prepared a list of Recent/Current Assistantship Sites for Doctoral Students to use in starting  your search, however we also encourage you to browse the main campus website to identify other offices/departments to contact for possible assistantship/employment opportunities. A site for available assistantships in the School of Education has also been established by the Office of Human Resources- School of Education 4150, Bloomington, IN 47405-1006 (812-856-8055).

GET TO KNOW CURRENT DOCTORAL STUDENTS:

Check out the “Student Profiles” section of the HESA Doctoral Program Web site to learn more about us. The profiles share the professional and research interests of current HESA students as well as some other fun facts about our lives. Please feel free to contact students directly with questions (their emails are included in their profiles).

PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN BE OF HELP TO YOU!

If you have questions of a general nature (e.g. where is my application, etc.) you can contact Nancy Pell, HESA Administrative Assistant at nnovotny@indiana.edu.   And please feel free to contact any of the Doctoral Recruitment Program committee members listed below, we are more than happy to talk with you!

Sincerely,
The Indiana University HESA Doctoral Recruitment Program Committee
