Toward A Research Agenda for International Teacher Education

Globalization, transcultural understanding, cosmopolitanism:  these have become prevalent themes in contemporary teacher education.  Yet despite widespread enthusiasm for internationalizing teacher preparation, little attention has been given to developing a comprehensive research literature in this area.  This working conference initiates an effort to address this need by formulating research priorities in three areas: 

  • Reconciling Global and Multicultural Perspectives
  • International Ethics and Citizenship
  • Internationalization of the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities.

Doug Bourn

Doug Bourn is Director of the Development Education Research Centre at the Institute of Education, University of London. This Centre is also part of an inter-collegiate initiative within the University of London on international development which is based at the London International Development Centre. His primary areas of expertise include global perspectives in higher education, global citizenship, theory of development education, and education for sustainable development.  He is Editor of the International Journal for Development Education and Global Learning and has written extensively on development education and education for sustainable development. He was formerly Director of the Development Education Association in the UK. His most recent publication is Development Education:  Debates and Dialogues. Doctor Bourn will deliver the keynote address, “Global Learning and Teacher Education Around the World” at the conference banquet.

 
Annette Scheunpflug

Prof. Dr. Annette Scheunpflug has a chair for General Education at the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. She has a strong background in culturally based factors of assessment and evaluation and extensive research experience in the field of development cooperation education. She is a member of the Counselling Board for Development Education and Global Learning in Schools of the German Ministry on Economic Cooperation and Development as well as a member of the Board of the Development Education Research Centre of the Institute of Education, University of London.  She is an elected member of the review board of the German Research Association and of several editorial boards, including the International  Journal for Development Education and Global Learning, forthcoming in London.  Doctor Scheunpflug will deliver the conference opening address on the topic of global education and cross-cultural learning.

Paul J. Ramsey

Paul J. Ramsey is a historian of education at Eastern Michigan University.  In 2007, he won the History of Education Society’s Henry Barnard Prize.  His forthcoming book, Bilingual Public Schooling in the United States: A History of America’s “Polyglot Boardinghouse,” will be published by Palgrave Macmillan.   Doctor Ramsey will deliver a general session address, “International Influences in the History of American Teacher Education.”
