Emergency Procedures

NOTE: In the unlikely event that the internal telephone system in the School of Education goes down during an emergency, other options for calling 911 are:

  • telephone line in the ETS equipment room on the ground level where 911 calls may be placed should our telephone system not function
  • cell phone

Fire Procedures

In the event of a fire, the sprinkler and smoke detection systems are designed to active the alarm automatically and notify IUPD.

  • Pull the fire alarm located near the fire doors.
  • Call 911 to report the alarm
  • Leave the building via the nearest stairway. Helping those in your area that need assistance or take note of the location of persons in need of assistance. Report injuries or those in need of assistance to emergency personnel as soon as you are out of the building.
  • Report to the lower level of the Jordan Parking Garage. Do not return to the building until the Fire Department gives the all clear

Tornado Procedures

In the event of a tornado (sirens may sound or an alert may come form the SOE Dean's Office).

  • Staff from the Dean's office will notify the departments and classrooms
  • Departments will then notify faculty offices and classrooms in their area by saying one of the following, depending on whether or not the room has windows:
    • No Windows: Bloomington is under a tornado warning. This means a tornado has been sighted and could touch down in our area. You are in a room without windows. Please remain here until the tornado warning is cancelled. It is not advisable to leave the building.
    • Windows: Bloomington is under a tornado warning. This means a tornado has been sighted and could touch down in our area. You are in a room with windows so this is an unsafe location. Please take shelter in an inside room or an area without windows in the basement or first floor of the building. (Have the person point in the appropriate direction.) It is not advisable to leave the building.
  • Direct faculty/staff/students to move to an area inside without windows either in basement or first floor. Avoid glass areas and exterior walls. DO NOT LEAVE THE BUILDING, UNLESS EXISTING CONDITIONS DEEM IT ADVISABLE.
  • After the advisory is over report injuries and damage to IUPD via 911.

Earthquake Procedures

An earthquake usually occurs without any type of warning. The Wright School of Education is built with expansion joints to allow the building to shift.

  • Attempt to get to a safe location, such as under a table or desk. Avoid bookshelves, glass areas and doorways.
  • After the earthquake report any injuries and building damage to IUPD via 911.

Threatening Phone call (Bomb threat)Procedures

In the event of a threatening phone call, remain calm and obtain as much information as possible. Listen carefully to what the caller is saying and do not interrupt.

  • Write down the exact wording of the threat
  • Write down the time and if the caller is male or female. Is the voice deep, soft, muffled or a whisper?
  • Questions to ask:
    • When will the bomb explode?
    • Where is the bomb?
    • What does the bomb look like?
    • What kind of bomb?
  • Call 911 to report to IUPD and then report to the Dean or Executive Associate Dean of the School of Education
  • If an evacuation is necessary, the decision will be made by the SOE Dean in connection with emergency personnel.
