Graduate Program Overview

This guide to graduate studies in Literacy, Culture, and Language Education is designed to provide an overview of information about the department and its offerings and requirements. We hope you will find the booklet helpful in explaining the many facets of the opportunities in our department. We hope also that you will use this guide as a reference for planning your program of studies.

The  Literacy, Culture, and Language Education Department emphasizes the joined study of literacy, second language learning, and English Education. The faculty has two primary concerns: the preparation of reading specialists to work in colleges and universities; federal, state and local governmental agencies; school reading clinics; and business and industry. Programs prepare people to work at the elementary, secondary, college and adult levels. A strong research and development emphasis coupled with the technological resources of the School of Education's "show case" building, the presence on campus of two ERIC centers, and funded research projects directed by many department faculty provide an unusually rich environment for scholarly effort. Several specialized centers relate to the department: The Student Academic Center (college reading); The Center for Reading and Language Studies; The Reading and Communication Skills and Development Center and the Center for Innovative Assessment. Special training and work experience opportunities are available for graduate students in these centers.
