Welcome to the ET-to-T Program

Program Description

The ET-to-T program is for those individuals who have already earned a baccalaureate degree and who are interested in becoming elementary teachers. The program is designed to develop, support and promote thoughtful, innovative practices and reflective teaching in elementary schools. In most cases, T-to-T teacher candidates will earn their elementary teaching certificate after three academic semesters of coursework. For more information about the master's program, including the brochure and course of study, please visit: Elementary Transition to Teaching plus Master's.

Program Overview

The next ET-to-T program cohort will begin in the fall of 2009; this cohort group should complete program expectations by the end of the fall semester 2010. ET-to-T candidates will take the majority of their coursework together and will work with mentor teachers in elementary classrooms at least one day each week for the first academic year. The sixteen-week student teaching experience is scheduled for the second fall semester of the program and at that time, teacher candidates work in schools five days a week.

ET-to-T Courses and Timelines

These courses are taken in a three-semester sequence, and courses are offered only once each academic year.  Professional coursework is divided into two categories: field-based and campus-based.  Field-based blocks must be taken together and are offered once per year; campus-based courses may be completed at any time they are offered.

Program Costs and Financial Aid

The expected cost of the program is approximately $10,000 for in-state students and $24,000 for non-resident students for certificaiton only.  For master's the cost is slightly higher approximately $17,000 for in-state studetns and $45,000 for non-resident students. These estimates include tuition for the coursework and additional fees specific to the program such as those associated with the field experiences. The estimates do not include mandatory student fees such as the application fee, technology fee, health service fees and transportation fees. The schedule of fees, as well as cost estimates for books, supplies, and living expenses, can be found by contacting the Office of the Bursar at (812) 855-2636 or http://bursar.indiana.edu.

All questions regarding financial aid must be directed to the Office of Student Financial Assistance; please call them at 812-855-031, email them at rsvposfa@indiana.edu, or review their website. Eligibility for financial assistance is based on completion of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form: www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Students who anticipate needing some form of financial aid should file the FAFSA at least 90 days before their program begins.

The Transition to Teaching program is a full-time, heavily field-based program. Students who leave full-time employment and who pursue the master's degree at the same time will, in most cases, be eligible for full financial aid (loans or work study). Students interested in work study can be provided the opportunity to work as reading or math tutors at local elementary schools. Since this work study setting will be in partnership with local school corporations, tutoring schedules will not conflict with the ET-to-T course and field schedule. This opportunity will enable students to meet their financial needs and, at the same time, develop and practice some of the skills that will be needed in the classroom setting.

Is This Program Right for You?

The Indiana University Elementary Transition to Teaching program seeks to prepare highly qualified beginning elementary school teachers. Successful ET-to-T candidates demonstrate a willingness and enthusiasm for becoming educators who will meet the challenges of tomorrow and who are - without question - dedicated to the success of all students. The most inspiring teachers are those who are as passionate about their calling as they are knowledgeable about their subject area. If this describes you, you may want to consider becoming an applicant for this new and innovative program.

The ET-to-T program is small and has an individual focus within a cohort-based program; consequently, enrollment is limited. Candidates for the fall 2009 cohort group will be identified based on assessment of all the elements of their application.
