Course Description

In this course, we will view art from a fundamental and theoretical perspective, asking and answering questions, discovering how our aesthetic values of art forms and is the voice of culture as a whole.   As participants, you will discover how the underlying social structures of culture define art and artists and expand your understanding of art as a language.  You will develop a better understanding and develop individual interpretations of art, how to introduce and discuss art in your classrooms and have a greater understanding of how art can be incorporated into every other subject. 

By using the Internet and the World Wide Web, you will find resources and develop lessons; through readings and interactive discussions you will develop advanced multicultural and cross-cultural understanding of art in society.  Most of all, you will learn techniques to initiating discussion in your classroom about works of art.

The purpose of this class is to empower you with knowledge and skills to discuss art in your classrooms and to use a variety of resources, including Internet-based technologies, to educate your students on the value of art in society.

Course Objectives
  • Determine your definition of 'What is Art?'
  • Determine where your values come from in what you consider to be art
  • Explore how your idea of art may be different from another's idea of art
  • Learn techniques on how to look and talk about visual art in the regular classroom
  • Develop visual perception skills and learn special strategies for looking at and understanding works of art 
  • Develop questioning strategies to use in the classroom
  • Integrate art with other subjects
  • Visit online art museums around the world
  • Learn some basic elements of art and basic principles of design
