Registering for Student Teaching
Determining Number of Weeks and Credits
EARLY CHILDHOOD MAJORS
M470 – Preschool / Kindergarten
First eight (8) weeks of semester
- Full-time student teaching in either kindergarten or preschool(6 hour minimum).
- This is one 8-week placement. You will be placed in first or last eight weeks of the semester.
Second eight (8) weeks of semester
- Full-time student teaching in either kindergarten or preschool.
- Taken after completion of M470 (first eight weeks)
- Location of this placement could be statewide.
- This is the second half of a 16-week placement and is considered a split assignment.
M424 – Primary
Fifteen (15) week placement
- Full-time student teaching in primary grades 1, 2, or 3.
- Location of this placement could be statewide.
- The semester for which you do M470 or M424 may vary, depending upon availability
Note: If you are seeking a special education minor or endorsement, your placement could involve 22-24 weeks, translating to 22-24 credit hours, which would extend your student teaching into another semester.
ELEMENTARY MAJORS WITH NO ENDORSEMENTS OR MINORS
M420 – Elementary
- Elementary majors must register for this two-credit “Student Teaching Seminar.”
- Taken in conjunction with M425.
- This is not a split assignment.
M425 – Elementary
- Fifteen (15) weeks of full-time student teaching in an elementary school, grades 1-6.
- Location for this placement could be statewide.
Note:Total credits for student teaching for elementary majors is 15 credits: 2 credits for M420 and 13 credits for M425.Most all elementary majors student teach for fifteen (15) weeks, unless you have an endorsement. In this case, your elementary placement would be ten (10) weeks and the endorsement six (6) weeks.
TAL Majors with NO endorsements
M425 / K480 - TAL
- Eight (8) weeks of full-time student teaching in a regular elementary classroom grades 1-6.
- Eight (8) weeks of full-time student teaching in a special education (LD, mild) classroom grades 1-6.
- Or sixteen (16) weeks of full-time student teaching with both a general elementary supervising teacher and a special education certified teacher as an integrated approach with work in the general classroom setting with inclusion, as well as experiences in a resource room.
Secondary Majors with NO Endorsements or Minors
M480 – Secondary
- A standard placement is 10 weeks (credits).
- Full-time student teaching in a secondary school (middle or junior/senior high school).
- Secondary student teachers might be able to teach some classes in the major area and some in the minor and/or supporting area(s). We can only guarantee placement in the major but we try to seek out combinations of classes. If you have a strong desire to student teach in your minor, your placement could be more difficult to design.
- To be fully covered under their parents' insurance or for financial aid purposes, students need to register for 12 credits. Each extra credit that you register for equals one week of student teaching (1 credit = 1 week of teaching).
- Location for this placement could be statewide.
- This is not a split placement.
New Secondary Anchor Requirements: Starting in the fall of 2005 students admitted under the new Secondary Anchor certification guidelines will begin student teaching. IF you are student teaching under the new Anchor requirements, you will need to register for 12 credits of M480 and 1 credit of M420, the student teaching seminar for a total of 13 credits. Please check with your advisor if you are unsure whether your are student teaching under old or new certification rules.
Science Education majors will student teach during the last 10 weeks of the semester, taking their methods and field experiences during the first six (6) weeks of the student teaching semester. Science education placements must be in the Bloomington area. Students must remember to register for student teaching as well as for the methods and field experiences. We will try to place you so that you teach in both your primary and your supporting area.
Social Studies majors have a primary area and two supporting areas. We will try to place you so that you teach in both your primary and supporting areas, but this cannot be guaranteed.
All-Grade Majors WITH NO MINORS OR ENDORSEMENTS
Includes: Special Education, Music, Physical Education (HPER), Visual Arts, Library/Media Services, and Speech/Hearing Sciences
M482 – All-Grade
- This placement is usually 10 weeks for 10 credits.
- Location for this placement could be statewide.
- To be fully covered under their parents' insurance or for financial aid purposes, some students need to register for more than the usual 10 credits. Each extra credit that you register for equals one week of student teaching (1 credit = 1 week of teaching).
- Special Education, Speech/Hearing Sciences, and Library/Media Services are split placements.

Elementary, Secondary, and All-Grade Majors Seeking Endorsements and/or Minors.
The following charts indicate endorsement areas and number of weeks/credits that are required for each. These can be taken with all majors. You will be student teaching in a split placement anytime you add an endorsement.

* You must first be admitted to the Reading Minor Program in order to get a reading endorsement. For further information on this program, contact the Language Education department.
Elementary majors seeking endorsements requiring student teaching not only register for the major M425 (10 weeks for 10 credits) and M420 (2 credits), but also register for the minor/endorsement M470, X425, or W410 (6 weeks for 6 credits). This would make a total of 18 credit hours.
If you are an elementary major with a special education minor, you register for M425 (8 weeks for 8 credits) and M470 Special Education (8 weeks for 8 credits) plus M420 (2 credits). This makes a total of 18 credits. These are split assignments requiring two placements.
Secondary majors seeking endorsements and/or minors requiring student teaching not only register for M480 (10 weeks for 10 credits), but also register for minor/endorsement M470, X425, or W410 (6 weeks for 6 credits). In these cases, the student teaching length would be16 weeks for 16 credits and would be a split placement.
If you are a secondary major with a special education minor, you register for M480 (8 weeks for 8 credits) and M470 (8 weeks for 8 credits). This makes a total of 16 weeks/credits. These are split assignments requiring two placements.
All-Grade majors seeking endorsements requiring student teaching not only register for the major, M482 (10 credits of Music, Physical Education, Library/Media, or Visual Arts), but also must register for the minor/endorsement M470, X425, or W410 (6 weeks for 6 credits), making a total of 16 weeks/credits. These are split assignments with two placements.
Special education majors seeking endorsements and/or minors requiring student teaching could be involved in placements requiring a total of 22-24 weeks, translating to 22-24 credits, which would extend your student teaching into another semester.
Graduate Students
M550 Graduate students who do not seek minors or endorsements will student teach (in most cases) for 10 weeks. Six credits are given to Speech & Hearing majors for completing eight (8) weeks student teaching. Graduate students who seek minors or endorsements could see longer student teaching times, usually 16 weeks for 16 credits.
- Graduate students should seek advice from their departments as to the number of weeks, credits, and placements required of your program.
- Register for M550 for the following special student teaching programs:
- ECGP -- Dr. Jesse Goodman's graduate certification program for elementary certification Placements arranged through Dr. Goodman's office.
- Graduate Special Education Certification program. Placements arranged through the Graduate Special Education office.
- Speech and Hearing. Placements arranged through Dr. Elizabeth McCrea's office in the Speech and Hearing Center.
- Library/Media Services. Placements arranged through Dr. Danny Callison’s office in the School of Library and Information Sciences. This major is at a graduate level, but students can register for M482 (undergraduate student teaching) or M550.
- Cultural Immersions. Overseas and Indian reservations placements are arranged through Dr. Laura Stachowski's office in the School of Education (Suite 1000).
- The total number of weeks, credits, and the configuration of your student teaching will be scheduled through the department that oversees your special program.
- Location for these placements could be statewide and has to be cleared through the department overseeing your special program.
- M550 graduate level with no minors or endorsements is one placement, whereas if a minor or endorsement is added, there would be more than one placement.
