Academic Standards Committee Appeal Format 2011-2012

PURPOSE: The Academic Standards Committee (ASC) is composed of faculty and staff charged with interpreting Indiana University and School of Education policies. Students may appeal to the committee for temporary or permanent waivers of admission requirements for the School of Education and Teacher Education Program (TEP); substitutions or adjustments to their academic program or field placement and student teaching program requirements; and/or exceptions to the graduation requirements.
PROCESS: The ASC meets once a month during the academic year to consider cases and as needed in the summer. Meeting dates are posted at the front desk in the Office of Teacher Education and on the OTE Calendar of Events at:

Appeals are due one week before the meeting. All appeals submitted are decided on an individual basis. Incomplete or late petitions may not receive the timely attention of the committee. The committee considers program requirements and may solicit additional faculty input in their deliberations. The disposition of each case is reported to the petitioner via their official university e-mail address.
FORMAT: To petition the ASC, prepare a one page typed summary of your request. The summary should be addressed to the Academic Standards Committee in the following format:

A. Heading:
1. SUBJECT: Academic Standards Committee Appeal
2. DATE: Date of your appeal
3. FROM: Full name and ten digit student identification number
4. ADDRESS: Local street address
5 IU E-MAIL: IU E-mail Address
6. TEP Program: Early Childhood, Elementary, TAL, English, Biology, Visual Arts, etc.
7. TEP ADMISSION STATUS: Never Applied, Denied, Conditional, or Unconditional

B. Requests for Course Substitutions;
1. State your request clearly- “I want to use X course for Y requirement in my program.”
2. Explain why you think the course is a reasonable substitute.
3. Include a course description or syllabus.
4. Course work from other IU campuses with the same course number and credits will transfer, but may not fit into IU Bloomington’s TEP sequence; courses with different numbers and credits will be evaluated on an individual basis.
5. If the course work is from another accredited institution in the USA go through the IU Credit Transfer Service (CTS) on-line at: http://cts.admissions.indiana.edu/transferin.cfm .
a. Attach the print out of the IUB course equivalency report to your appeal.
b. If the course work comes in as undistributed (UN) then seek an evaluation from the
appropriate IUB academic department and attach their evaluation to your appeal.
6. If the course work is transferred from a sponsored Study Abroad program or foreign institution, attach a copy of the Study Abroad Credit Transfer Agreement or IU Overseas Study Advising form with the appeal.

C. Student Appeals to Modify Field Experiences or Student Teaching Assignments:
1. Changes in location or circumstances of a placement are determined by the Directors of the
activity, the appeals process should be used only in extraordinary circumstances.
2. Submit a request to the ASC using the standard format. The faculty committee will only
consider specific and compelling reasons for modifying assignments or requirements in
consultation with the Directors of the activity.

We do not accept letters that have been sent to our office as e-mail attachments unless you are currently studying abroad or student teaching outside the Bloomington area. A fax copy of your letter will not be accepted.

NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS: Each petitioner will be notified by e-mail of the results of the appeal process. If the appeal is successful, the SOE recorder will be notified to make the adjustment to your program plan and a copy of the appeal decision will be added to your academic advising file.
If you disagree with the decision given by the ASC, you may prepare a written appeal to the Associate Dean for Teacher Education. Your appeal to the Associate Dean for Teacher Education should include new and compelling evidence or rationale that warrants reconsideration of the ASC decision. The new appeal must follow the same format outlined above for the ASC.
